A kitchen reset isn't a renovation. It's deciding where six things live and then actually putting them there — an afternoon, no drilling required for most of it, and the room reads differently by dinner. Work in this order: counter, wall, drawer, shelf, sink, light. Each zone takes the clutter off the one before it.
All prices in Canadian dollars.
1. The counter: give the utensils one home
Start where you actually cook. Loose spatulas in a jam-packed crock are the reason the counter never looks settled — you dig, you knock two out, you leave them lying by the hob. A dedicated holder keeps the tools you reach for together and leaves the prep surface clear.
2. The wall: get the knives out of the drawer
A knife block eats prime counter space, and a drawer full of loose blades is the thing you reach into carefully. A securely mounted wall rack can free the counter and keep blades out of the drawer; follow the rack's fitting instructions.
3. The drawer: one compartment per thing
The cutlery drawer is the easiest win in the house because nobody sees it, which is exactly why it never gets done. Drawer dividers turn a tangle into something you can open one-handed. Measure the drawer width before choosing a layout.
4. The shelf: decant the staples you use weekly
Don't decant the whole pantry — that's how this stalls. Do the four or five things you reach for every week: oats, coffee, pasta, rice, flour. Clear jars mean you can see the level from across the room, which is the entire point.
Airtight Glass Storage Jar Set with Bamboo Lids · from $55.99
Clear glass jars with airtight bamboo lids, so you can see what’s running low without opening a bag. Start with a single jar at $55.99 and build up to a set of four.
5. The sink: stop drying dishes on the counter
The tea towel folded on the counter with three wet mugs on it is the last thing standing between this kitchen and finished. Bridge the sink corner instead and the water goes back where it came from.
Dish Rack — Black Triangle Drying · $24.99
Stainless steel rods in a triangle that bridges the corner of the sink, so dishes, mugs and rinsed produce drain into the basin. Rolls up flat when you want the space back.
6. Under the cabinets: light the counter, not the ceiling
Do this one last and it makes the other five look better. Overhead light throws your own shadow onto the exact spot you're chopping on; a line of light under the cabinet lands where your hands are. As the evenings draw in through September, it's the change you'll notice most.
LED Under Cabinet Lighting Kit
A slim rechargeable LED bar that lights the counter the ceiling fixture misses — also good inside a pantry or along a shelf. Four lengths from 20 to 50 cm, in black or silver, on a magnetic mount you lift off to charge.
The order matters more than the budget
If you only do two of the six, do the counter and the light. Clearing the utensils gives you back the surface you prep on, and lighting that surface properly is what makes a tidy kitchen feel finished rather than just empty. The drawer can wait for a rainy Sunday.
