Small-Space Thanksgiving: Five Fixes That Aren’t the Table

Three lidded woven storage baskets in graduated sizes on a wooden sideboard in a living room, two with the lids open showing floral-trimmed fabric liners

Thanksgiving in a small place is rarely a table problem. The table works out — you borrow a chair, you shuffle the seats, you make it fit. What goes wrong is everything around it: coats and clutter with nowhere to land, a drink balanced on a sofa cushion, a guest bathroom that was tidied in a hurry, and the moment after dinner when everyone moves to the living room and the ceiling light is still on full.

Here are five fixes for that part of the day. None of them touch the table, and every one of them can be done in the hour before people arrive.

All prices in Canadian dollars.

1. Give the clutter somewhere to go — with a lid

The half hour before guests arrive is not the time to find homes for the remotes, the chargers, the mail and the craft project on the console. It is the time to put them somewhere with a lid on it. Baskets that close look deliberate; an open basket of stuff just looks like a basket of stuff.

Line them up on a console or a sideboard, load them in one sweep, and put the lids on. Nobody knows what is inside and the surface reads as clear.

Three woven baskets in graduated sizes, each with a fitted lid and a soft floral-trimmed fabric liner inside. They nest inside one another the rest of the year.

2. Warm up the chairs nobody wants to sit in

Every small-space Thanksgiving involves at least one borrowed chair, one desk chair, or one end of a bench. You cannot make those seats match, but you can make them look chosen. One cushion in an autumn colour does more for a mismatched seating corner than any amount of rearranging.

Buy the cover rather than the whole cushion and you can put the summer one back on in January.

Corduroy Pillow Cover - 50 x 50 cm · $48.99
Wide-wale corduroy in a warm mustard-gold — rich rather than bright orange. It is the cover only, so it slips over a 50 x 50 cm insert you already own.

3. Solve the drink with nowhere to go

Once the meal is over, everyone moves to the soft seating — and a small living room rarely has enough side tables to go around. A glass balanced on a sofa cushion is a spill waiting for someone to stand up.

An arm tray turns the end of a sofa into a surface. It is the cheapest side table you will ever buy, and it comes off again when the room goes back to normal.

Natural Wood Couch Arm Tray · $43.99
A natural wood tray with a curved lip that drapes over the arm and anchors itself with its own weight. The wood is unvarnished, so put a coaster under a cold glass.

4. Make the guest bathroom feel prepared

This is the one room every guest visits alone, and the one that gives you away. A damp towel on the rail says the room was an afterthought. A folded stack of fresh towels says you were expecting people.

You do not need new fittings. Two clean hand towels, folded, on the counter is the whole fix — and it is the last thing to do before the doorbell goes.

Waffle Stonewashed Cotton Towels · From $37.99
Waffle-weave cotton, stonewashed for a softer feel, in beige, brown, dark grey or red. Choose hand towels, a bath towel, or a bundle of both.

5. Turn the overhead light off after dinner

Nothing ends an evening faster than an overhead light at full brightness on a table of empty plates. The move is to drop the light level the moment the food is done: lamps on, ceiling light off, and something with a flame in the middle of the room.

Put one at the centre of the table when you clear it, or move it to the coffee table and let it hold the room together while everyone sits with the last of the wine.

Elegant Round Glass Candle Holders - Center · $46.99
Round glass that catches candlelight and glows through the form. Made to sit at the centre of a table, a mantel or a shelf.

That is the whole list: a lid, a cushion, a surface, a folded towel, and a lower light level. Do them in that order and the hour before dinner stops being a scramble.
